Let me just start off by saying this: there are a lot of boudoir photographers in Vancouver. I love the idea of boudoir photography but honestly struggle with the name of the genre. I know, it’s referencing a bygone era where women’s bedrooms were considered their own private sanctuary of luxury, lace, and perfume. Ok, so, I get that. But how should romantic and pretty translate today? Ultimately, these portrait sessions are sensual and very personal. They really shouldn’t be based on anyone else’s identification with self or worth. They are about you. What does that look like? More importantly, what does that feel like? So, we take it there.

We live in an age where authenticity and natural beauty are being set against being glamorous. But we can be real and ourselves while also being decked out like Beyoncé at Coachella. At the heart of all these personas that we put on is a regular everyday person. Therefore, in boudoir or intimate portrait photography, it comes down to taking this genre and elevating it beyond an unattainable Victoria’s Secret ad. Well, we push it to make it less posed, more introspective, and about emotions. Usually, these photos are taken of a person alone, so it makes perfect sense to make it more about the inside than the out.
